St George and Washington County Local Activities and Attractions St George and Washington County are located in the Southwest in an area that enjoys mild winters and warm summers. The community is very outdoor and fitness oriented. The geography here is ideal for those likeminded individuals. There are 3 warm water lakes in Washington County; Gunlock, Sand Hollow and Quail Creek all of which offer water skiing, fishing, swimming, beaches and any other warm water recreation. Lake Powell is just 2.5 hours away for more aquatic recreational opportunities. The Virgin River comes out of Zion National Park and offers swimming, jogging trails, wildlife viewing, swimming and more. For being in a desert, there are plenty of water areas to enjoy the outdoors at. The Red Cliffs National Recreational Area has a small creek and slot canyons to hike and enjoy as well as areas for camping and enjoying the virgin river. Mountain Biking, running and hiking are all activities enjoyed by locals and there are literally hundreds of miles of trails to explore.St George is home to the Tuacahn ampitheater, the Dixie Center, and Dixie State University all of which offer shows and programs. There are plenty of modern movie theaters and shopping to enjoy in the area as well. But St George became a retirement hotspot in part due to the great weather, but also due to the exceptional quality and amount of quality golf courses in the area. Some of the most beautiful courses can be found here. At the time of this publication, Sand Hollow is the top rated golf course in the state offering professional grade greens and spectacular backdrops. Sky Mountain, Green Springs, Sun Brook, and Entrada are just a few others that are world renowned courses. And there is Mesquite just a half hour away with its array of golfing opportunities for the links lover in the family. St George is also know for its proximity to Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon, but almost as spectacular are the State Parks located around St George and Washington County. Hurricane is not only a great place for affordable real estate, but is home to Sand Hollow State Park, Quail Creek State Park, and Red Cliffs National Recreation area. Just north of Santa Clara and Ivins are the Gunlock State Park and Snow Canyon State Park. The recreational activities and active lifestyle in this area are unique and welcoming to all.
